Spontaneous tumors in Sprague-Dawley rats and Swiss mice.

چکیده
A spontaneous tumor incidence of 45% was noted in 360 Sprague-Dawley rats (179 males and 181 females) and a 26% incidence was seen in 254 Swiss mice (101 males and 153 females) used as untreated control animals in an 18month series of carcinogenesis experiments. The percentage of female rats with tumors was almost double that of males, which difference was accounted for chiefly by the high incidence of mammary tumors in the females. The largest number of rat tumors occurred in the endocrine system, mainly the pituitary and adrenal glands, with females exhibiting a higher incidence than males. There were no liver tumors. The largest group of mouse tumors occurred in the pul monary system, with a higher incidence in females than in males. Urinary system tumors were observed in the males but not in the females. Tumors of the integument, repro ductive organs, and the reticuloendothelial and lymphatic organs were also observed.

متن کاملIncidence of spontaneous central nervous system tumors in CD-1 mice and Sprague-Dawley, Han-Wistar, and Wistar rats used in carcinogenicity studies.
The incidence and range of spontaneous central nervous system tumors were determined in control Charles River rodents (Sprague-Dawley, Han-Wistar, Wistar rats, and CD-1 mice) from regulatory carcinogenicity studies carried out over the period 2002 to 2013 and were compared with the previously published data. In both species, the brain was notably more affected than the spinal cord. Incidences w...
متن کاملSpontaneous tumors in Sprague-Dawley and Long-Evans rats and in their F1 hybrids: carcinogenic effect of total-body x-irradiation.
Rats frequently develop various tumors, many of them malignant; the majority of tumors in the females develop in the mammary glands. In primary spontaneous tumors and lymphomas virus particles cannot be found on electron microscopic examination; transmission of the tumors by filtered extracts has not been successful. In our colonies of Sprague-Dawley rats the incidence of tumors was 22% in fema...
متن کاملReview of experimental carcinogenesis by compounds related to vinyl chloride.
The experimental carcinogenesis results in six compounds related to vinyl chloride are reported. Vinylidene chloride, given by inhalation, was carcinogenic in male CD-1 mice, male CD rats, Sprague-Dawley rats and male Swiss mice. Trichloroethylene, given by gavage and inhalation, was carcinogenic in the B6C3F1 mice. When given by gavage, perchloroethylene was carcinogenic in the B6C3F1 mice, an...
متن کاملHistorical control background incidence of spontaneous pituitary gland lesions of Han-Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats and CD-1 mice used in 104-week carcinogenicity studies
The aim of this study was to determine the range and incidences of spontaneous microscopic lesions of the pituitary gland in control Han-Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats and CD-1 mice from 104-week carcinogenicity studies carried out between 1998 and 2010 at Charles River Edinburgh. In both strains of rats and in CD-1 mice, non-proliferative lesions of the pituitary gland were generally uncommon,...
